Jatin Lalit

July 30th, 2008

Jatin and Lalit are musicians who compose music primarily for the soundtracks of Bollywood movies. They are brothers and come from a lineage of Indian classical musicians. They are the sons of composer Chitragupt Pandit. Jatin-Lalit is a short version of their full names, which appears on covers of music CDs, DVDs. Jatin Pandit and Lalit Pandit are their actual names. Lalit is nine years younger than Jatin.

Over the years they have developed their unique style of music composition.

Overview

They began their career in 1992, composing music for the Hindi movie Yaara Dildara. They were first noticed for their work on the soundtrack of the movie Khiladi and for Pehla Nasha, a successful romantic song from the movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. Their compositions are noted for their melody and harmony, and are reported to have been strongly influenced by R. D. Burman’s style of music making. Towards the second half of the nineties, they were among the most sought after music directors in the Indian film industry.

The duo has always used many singers according to the need of the situation. Their works with veteran lyricists Javed Akhtar are great pieces of musical magic and Anand Bakshi as well. To cite a few are Yes Boss, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. Noted singer Kumar Sanu has worked with the duo and have also given hits under their compositions and evergreen songs that would be remembered for years to come, to cite a few are, “tujhe dekha to” (from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge) and “jab kisiki taraf” (from Pyar To Hona Hi Tha).

Special Appearances

It is interesting to note that Jatin of this duo has appeared on the big screen. In the movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar he appeared in the song called Diwane Hum Pyar Ke. He is actually dancing and singing the song on screen himself. Seeing him on screen no one could tell that he is the music director of the film. He has done a remarkable job. Further Jatin also sings Ruth Ke Hamse Kabhi in the Film which is a back ground song picturised on Aamir Khan remembering his childhood memories with his elder brother. Indeed Jatin has done real justice to his number as he sings from his heart.

Plagiarism

It’s always in the focus of a good music director that his style and creativity are original and benchmarking. Though Jatin-Lalit have their own great style and originality, it has been found that they are inspired by few musical works [twenty two songs in their career] of other musicians [western] and done some modifications. However not only Jatin-Lalit have been inspired by other musicians, but noted music directors like R D Burman,Rajesh Roshan, Anu Malik, Deva (Tamil) are also known to have inspired by works of other musicians.

Lead actor as a singer

Jatin-Lalit are pioneers of making a non-singing lead actor sing in a soundtrack of a movie. They specially composed a song called “Ae kya bolti tu” in the film Ghulam which is sung by the lead actor Aamir Khan. The song was an instant hit. Then after a long gap, they made Sanjay Dutt sing in the movie Khoobsurat.

Shared Music Score

During last few years of their joint career their music albums contained a few songs composed by some other musicians. This practice is not liked by Jatin-Lalit, however, the producer and director insisted on it. It first happened with Karan Johar’s K3G, where two of the tracks where composed by youngster Sandesh Shandilya. Then Chalte Chalte is a good example. In this movie, Aadesh Shrivastava has composed 2-3 songs. Also in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, one song is composed by Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid-Wajid.

Work with TV channels

Jatin-Lalit are famous for being recluses. They neither attend big parties, nor come in for media interviews. Jatin-Lalit were appointed as judges in the hit musical show “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” - the musical challenge. This show was created by Zee Televisions. In the show duration, Jatin-Lalit fans got an opportunity to see and learn their honest behavior and modest conduct. After the grand success of “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa”, they judged another musical show “Star Voice of India” in Star Plus.

The Separation

After working for almost 16 years together, they announced that they would be parting ways. Fanaa was their last movie together. Reasons for the separation are unknown. Their separation was a huge shock to their hard-core fans. Now they compose music independently for movies.

Lalit has managed to get a few assignments. His recent music score was for “Life Mein Kabhie Kabhiee” - a movie by Vikram Bhatt (year 2007) did not go down well with the audiences. His scre in Showbiz has been a moderate success.

Jatin is currently working on Planman Life’s Production titled I AM 24, starring Neha Dhupia and Rajat Kapoor and directed by Saurav Shukla. It is a diwali release. He has also composed for filmmaker Raja Sen’s next venture Krishnakanter. “I am working on the number. I am trying to make it in such a way that it goes along with the novel written by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay. The song will be melody based,” says Jatin. He has also recorded an album for IBPC President Abbas Ali Mirza which is to be released shortly. Jatin is all set to give opportunities to upcoming talent as he realises that there is so much of it, while working on the TV show Voice Of India as a mentor.

Recently the duo have composed a few songs in the Arshad Warsi-Suniel Shetty starrer Mr. White Mr. Black

Awards and Recognition

Jatin-Lalit are probably the best current melody music composers carrying on the traditional class of Indian music. But are the most underrated composers. Their great works often went unrecognized by government as well as by media awards such as the Filmfare Award Before separation, in an interview, Jatin-Lalit cited their only regret as not getting any kind of award.

In spite of their successful career they have neither got any Indian National Award by the government of India nor the Bollywood’s most prestigious Filmfare Award.

They say that recognition from the audience is like a big award.

Many songs by this duo have become immortal. The soundtrack of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, composed by Jatin-Lalit, was judged the top Hindi sound track of all time by on-line voters on the BBC Asian Network. Interestingly, the number two and three positions also went to Jatin-Lalit for their compositions from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai respectively.

Their last work together, Fanaa received Filfare for the best song of the year for the song Chand Sifarish. It was received by Shaan, the singer of the song, who said that it was a fitting end to a successful partnership and he said that he wish that both of them be back together.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

June 14th, 2008

shankar_ehsaan_loy.jpg

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa. They are music composers from India. They have teamed together to provide music for several Indian Films. Some of their famous works includes scores for movies such as Mission Kashmir (2000), Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Bunty Aur Babli (2005) , Don and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) and most recently for Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love (2007),Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007),Johnny Gaddaar (2007), and Taare Zameen Par (2007). Each member of this trio brings his own unique talents and experiences to the group, combining the Carnatic and Classical Indian vocal tradition (Shankar), Western Rock (Ehsaan) and a deep understanding of fusion including a virtual mastery over the Electronic Synthesizer (Loy). They continue a tradition quite common in Bollywood Music, that of partnerships between music composers contributing and pooling their individual strengths, sometimes combining deep knowledge of Hindustani (North Indian) or Carnatic (South Indian) classical music and technical expertise as composers and orchestral arrangers. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy probably represent the first ‘trio’ of music composers to entertain Bollywood audiences with their chart-topping music. They are slowly becoming popular by the title ‘Amar-Akbar-Anthony’ of Bollywood music.

The eternal quest among Bollywood’s music composers has been to create interest among younger audiences who tend to be inspired more by musical themes and influences from the west. Since a film’s music (Soundtrack) is a very influential and critical component of commercial and critical success required and achieved or sometimes squandered at the box office, this quest to “deliver a film” has always inspired music composers to create tunes which magically combine the best of both traditional Indian music and popular western or international influences and an overwhelming majority of Bollywood’s most popular music has been composed based on Classical Indian Rāgas (in Sanskrit “Raga” is literally “colour” or “mood”). Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have come to create and retain a sweet spot in the mindspace of young audiences by successfully bridging that gap in their own inimitable style. They have won and continue to win critical and commercial acclaim and several awards from the Bollywood Press and Magazines, TV Channels and a National Film Award (Kal Ho Naa Ho, 2003). Their success owes to several contributing factors, among which are the adoption of interesting musical instruments and sounds as part of their orchestral palette, introduction of new voices weaned on immensely popular TV Musical Talent shows and an obsession for the perfect ‘feel’ for the movie scene necessitating the segue into a song sequence.

Anu Malik

June 5th, 2008

420200625740pmanumalik.jpg

Anwar Malik, better known as Anu Malik is a music director in the Hindi (or Bollywood) film industry. He has won the National Award for his work in Refugee. His song “Chamma Chamma” from China Gate was used in the English movie Moulin Rouge, starring Nicole Kidman, and “Chunari Chunari” from Biwi No.1 was used in Monsoon Wedding. With his work in crossover films like Bride and Prejudice, he is among the few with international projects to his credit.

Early years

The son of veteran composer Sardar Malik, Anu Malik (Anwar Malik) made his debut in 1981 with Poonam. He composed for various films like Sohni Mahiwal and Ganga Jamuna Saraswathi, but he did not get the required attention, or recognition. One of the only producers that always returned to him were FC Mehra’s Eagle Films. Other early films were:

Mard

Maa

Maalamaal

Love Marriage

Aasman

Jaal

Allah Rakha

Mujrim

It is said that his first film was Hunterwali 77.

The rise

Anu Malik’s time came in 1993. With Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee, Jaanam, Sir, and Baazigar, Anu Malik had arrived. The next year, he won the FilmFare Award for Baazigar.
Recognition

In 2001, he exhibited his versatility, when his work was used in movies like Aks, Fiza, Filhal and Mujhe Kuch Kehena hai (among others).

Style of music

He is known to be the most versatile among the Indian music directors, giving music to almost all kinds of films, without being repetitive, which is said to be the reason for his success.

Another specialty of Anu Malik is his choice of singers and lyricists. Unlike his peers, such as Nadeem Shravan, who tend to prefer mainstream singers like Kumar Sanu and popular lyricist Sameer in all their films, Anu Malik has always tried different singers and lyricists. He was the first to use singers like Kay Kay and Sonu Niigaam as lead singers in his films, thus adding variety. Many of his hit albums do not have one single lead lyricist, but instead a host of individual lyricists. Anu Malik sometimes uses telugu(tollywood) singers such as S. P. Balasubramaniam and Chitra.

Alisha Chinai and Anu Malik

Anu’s association with Alisha Chinai has also been very successful, delivering major hits such as “Sexy Sexy” from Khuddar; “Ruk Ruk Ruk” from Vijaypath; and the recent songs from No Entry. For some time, they did not work for each other, following Alisha’s claim that Anu Malik mistreated her. But given Anu Malik’s style of music, he needed a singer of Alisha’s class and style. For Alisha, without Anu Malik, work was hard to come by, barring a few private albums, which in India pale in comparison to the film music popularity. Thus, their coming together was inevitable.

Indian Idol

Anu Malik was one of the 4 judges in the TV show with Alisha Chinai, Udit Narayan and Javed Akhtar. He was a judge in the first Asian Idol held in Indonesia, representing Indian Idol.

Love

In 2004, Anu Malik composed songs for a Kannada film entitled Love. The film has been dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam after the success of the Kannada version.

Singer

Anu Malik also does playback singing for his compositions. Although he is not a mainstream singer, he has a unique style. For a person who was written off as a singer in his early days (”Julie Julie,” for instance), he has evolved well, with songs like “Ek Garam Chaye ki Pyali” (Salman Khan), “Gori Gori” in Main Hoon Na or the recent “Meri Jane Jigar” in the film Deewane Huye Pagal.

While he sings entire songs for some movies, especially those starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and even Shahid Kapoor (in Deewane Huye pagal he sang almost every song), very often one can hear him in the chorus, like in “Mehbooba Mehebooba” in the film Ajnabi, or “Tumse milke dilka ka…” for the film Main Hoon na, or even in his latest release, “Rockstar” in the film Humko Deewana Kargaye.

He is also known for his singing for his private albums popular among the masses like Dekho baarish ho rahi hai, Tera chehra, Dhua dhua and an English album, Eyes.

Awards

Anu Malik has won The National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the film Refugee in 2001, and won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award twice for Main Hoon Na (2004) and Baazigar (1993). He also got Special Jury Award (Filmfare) in 2000 for his outstanding contribution in music.
